Election Day: origins of "to vote / votare"

Two possible origins for to vote / votare: 

1. From the Indo-European root vâgh- hence the Sanskrit vâgh-àt = votive promise, sacrifice 

2. From the Gothic vôp-jan = to invoke 

 

Then the Latin vovere = to promise solemnly, to wish, to consecrate
